Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Flakes—a New Form

چکیده
LLE Review, Volume 74 139 The last 20 years have seen a growth of mixed-media systems in which cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC’s) are one component. These include polymer-dispersed CLC’s1 in which the CLC’s are confined to microdroplets within a continuous isotropic polymer and CLC’s in gels2 in which there is a small amount of polymer to stabilize the CLC structure. In either case, the continuity of the cholesteric texture is interrupted.

Electric-field-induced motion of polymer cholesteric liquid-crystal flakes in a moderately conductive fluid.
Polymer cholesteric liquid-crystal flakes suspended in a fluid with nonnegligible conductivity can exhibit motion in the presence of an ac electric field. The plateletlike particles with a Grandjean texture initially lie parallel to the cell substrates and exhibit a strong selective reflection that is diminished or extinguished as the flakes move. Flake motion was seen within a specific frequen...

LLE Review, Volume 118 80 Introduction The suspension of polymer cholesteric liquid crystal (PCLC) flakes in a fluid creates the possibilities for a particle-based, electrically driven technology with a wide variety of applications ranging from displays and electronic paper to electrooptic polarizers and filters. The technology produces devices with a bright, saturated, and circularly polarized...
متن کاملColor Gamut of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Films and Flakes by Standard Colorimetry
LLE Review, Volume 73 59 Ever since cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC’s) were discovered in 1888,1 CLC colors have been noted for their qualitative vividness and luminosity;2 however, there have been few quantitative colorimetric studies examining CLC’s as colorants. We will describe how CLC’s produce color, what colorimetric studies have been done on them, and how we have extended and improved ...
متن کاملPolymer Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Flake Reorientation in an Alternating-current Electric Field
274 LLE Review, Volume 100 Introduction The motion and orientation of nonspherical particles suspended in a host fluid and subjected to an alternating-current (ac) electric field have been well studied theoretically. Because the dielectric properties of the two phases of the suspension differ, charge will start to accumulate at the particlefluid interface due to MaxwellWagner polarization. Th...
متن کاملPreparation of a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase in planar orienting liquid crystal cells exhibits
Preparation of a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase in planar orienting liquid crystal cells exhibits discontinuous colour changes with temperature when viewed between crossed polarizers. The trans mission spectra of such a system can be described by a modified de Vries equation, with the bire fringence dispersion included in a simplified single-band model. With a suitable choice of the cel...
